The performing arts sector covers theatre, musical theatre, dance, opera, puppetry, mime, carnival, street and circus arts as well as all the support functions and roles which bring these artforms to the fore.
The industry is highly diverse and includes players ranging from large commercial companies to small and microfirm groups who may be dependent on both public and private financial support.
Performing arts contribute £4.1B to the UK economy, with 84,470 people working in the sector. There are a few high profile organisations like the National Theatre and Royal Opera House but the majority of the sector is made up with small organisations. Many organisations are publically funded, usually through the Arts Council.
