This dance programme provides opportunities for a holistic and in-depth study of dance with an emphasis on education. It develops the knowledge and skills in dance which underpin the many varied and vocational opportunities in the field of education. The course embraces conceptual, analytical, practical, choreographic and performance studies.

The aims of the Dance Education programme are to:

equip students with knowledge and skills in the core activities of creating, performing and critically appraising dance;
develop understanding of the significance of a balanced and holistic study of dance through appreciating the inter-relationship between the elements of creating, performing and appreciating dance;
broaden knowledge of social, historical, political and contemporary contexts within which dance is produced, circulated and received;
enhance the appreciation of dance through debating critical and cultural issues and perspectives;
facilitate the acquisition of research skills and in-depth study in a specialist area(s) of interest;
provide sufficient and appropriate subject knowledge for a variety of vocational fields, work opportunities and postgraduate study.


Content and Structure

The Dance Education programme is studied over three years full time. Study is, generally, undertaken at three levels (one for each year of study).
The programme is divided into study units called modules. Modules have a range of credit values including 10, 20, 30 and 40 credits according to the subject and nature of learning. Each 20 credit module represents approximately 180 hours of student learning, endeavour and assessment, with the number of teaching hours appropriate to the nature of the subject. Each level has an equivalent of 120 credits.

Students take a common core of modules in the first year, providing a sound base from which to diversify and/ or specialise. A provisional programme of study is outlined below:

The entry requirements for Dance Education (and all degree programmes) can be found on the entry requirements page. Criteria for admission rest upon the principles that the applicant has prior experience in dance and is able to demonstrate their potential for: benefiting from an education in dance contribution to the development of dance education within Canterbury Christ Church University and in the wider professional and community context. A balance between knowledge and skills in technical, creative and critical aspects of dance study is sought. Some background experience in dance is essential in any dance style. Those with a Foundation degree in Performing Arts and Dance can apply to enter Level 3 of the Dance Education degree. The offer of a place on the Dance Education degree (at Level 1 or 3) will be based on an interview, short written task and audition.
