The BA (Hons) in Creative Music Technology focuses on the latest developments in sound recording and audio processing and presentation. The programme is designed for students with a creative background in electronic composition and production, DJ technology or audio software development. Creative Music Technology students have the opportunity to develop their creative ideas within the fully equipped digital studios and perform or exhibit their works in a range of contexts, such as performances, installations and websites.
The programme aims to bring students to a new awareness of the creative potential of sound in contemporary culture, and how the analysis and manipulation of sound can be used to relate to other art forms and academic disciplines, such as the Visual and Performing Arts as well as Digital Media.
Issues such as the comparison between analogue and digital techniques, the relation of sound to physical space and the application of web technology to sonic practice will be explored, whilst students will be encouraged to work together with the University’s electronic ensemble CONTACT in the development of material for performance.
Content and Structure:
At level one students undertake a broad range of study covering an introduction to computer sequencing and sampling, hardware and software techniques, the historical and cultural context of Creative Music Technology and the processes by which sound is structured and documented.
At level two students apply these skills to the continued study of software techniques, and are introduced to the history of electronic music and to the fundamentals of web design. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on these studies in a creative portfolio of compositions, sound works or installations.
At level three this creative strand is enhanced by an in-depth study of Sound Art, advanced software techniques and the development of online interactive sound works. Students also work towards a substantial portfolio of creative work involving installations, electronic performances and collaborations.
