This programme will be appropriate for (a) musicians who wish to pursue education, but who have not yet established an advanced knowledge base within music as their specialist area; and/or (b) candidates who, perhaps relying on an irregular or informal background in musical training, wish to pursue music in the context of the broader cultural and social issues represented by the principles of education.
With tutorial advice, students will be able to pursue courses of study tailored to their strengths and interests, in for example Performance, Composition, or General musicianship, in addition to studies in education.
Content and StructureThe BA(MusEd) programme consists of approximately two thirds music, and one third education. A choice of modules is available at each level, so that students are able to develop areas of specialism as they progress from the broad foundation offered at Level 1 to a highly individualised programme of study at Level 3.
Core modules at every level bring together the broad principles of music, education and creativity.
LEVEL 1
At Level 1 students will enter one of two musical pathways. Those on the Performance pathway have Performance as a Principal Study module, taught through a combination of seminars and weekly individual lessons.
Students on the General pathway need not specialise in performance, but choose from a range of foundation modules, which may include modules focused on music or education. There is a core module in Tonal Music, and another introducing the principles of education, for all students.
LEVEL 2
Following the successful completion of Level 1, students begin to specialise in their areas of particular interest. The range of Principal Study modules available is extended to include Composition or Musicology, and optional modules are chosen to create a careful balance between music and education. Choices include Church Music, Music Technology, Music in Business, Popular and Jazz Styles, and Topics in Music History, as well as a range of modules focused on education.
LEVEL 3
At Level 3, students may elect to continue with a Principal Study, and/or choose from a range of further option modules. These include Instrumental Teaching and Learning, and an Independent Study in which strands of music and education are drawn together. At all levels, students have exceptional opportunities for putting their work into practice, through for example the realisation of their compositions or performances
Applications for the Single Honours degree in Music Education are made through UCAS, see the UCAS codes page of the CCC website. Basic entry requirements can be found on the entry requirements page. Additionally, applicants will need an A2 Level in Music at C or above, (or a recognised Access certificate, or a Merit in an appropriate BTEC course). Applicants for the Performance pathway should also have Grade 8 of the ABRSM on an instrument or voice, or be able to demonstrate equivalence at audition. Applicants for the General music pathway should have Grade 5 of the ABRSM, or demonstrate equivalence at audition. All prospective students are called to an interview and audition that allows them to demonstrate their skills, visit the Department and find out more about the Music programmes. An audition piece of about 3-5 minutes will be expected, and an accompanist will normally be available.
Mature students without formal qualifications may be accepted in special circumstances, subject to interview and audition.
Refer to www.canterbury.ac.uk For an explanation of qualifications, have a look at our IAG page on this site www.creativeway.org.uk/quals.
A Progression Agreement is a formal arrangement between two or more
education providers. It spells out what a learner needs to do to be
considered for a place on a named programme of study. Progression Agreements
may vary in the conditions they specify but they all aim to give guaranteed
pathways into higher education.
