The BA (Hons) in Music Industry Management provides a comprehensive preparation for employment within the creative and cultural industries, and specifically the Music Industry. With an increasing focus on areas such as record label management, music publishing, digital music management and entertainment law, students will gain a specialised knowledge of the operation of the Industry in terms of music production, marketing and distribution, as well as the legal framework which underpins the commercial exploitation of music in the global marketplace. In addition to the focus on the Music Industry, students will also gain knowledge and skills of management more generally, and be prepared for management positions in production industries, service industries as well as the public sector.

A key part of the BA (Hons) in Music Industry Management is the operation of the University’s record label – C3U Records. Students are responsible for the co-ordination and development of the label, signing new acts and working with existing C3U artists to maximise the commercial potential of the label’s back catalogue of recordings.


Content and structure

Level one students undertake a broad range of study incorporating essential management knowledge and skills relating to the management of people and information and gain valuable experience of business accounting.

Level two students develop further their capabilities for business management and entrepreneurship through modules such as Management and Leadership and Record Label Management.
In addition, students will gain a practical understanding of concert venue management and supporting music tours.

Level three students enhance further their knowledge of strategic management, and also undertake an in-depth Music Industry project of their choosing. Students are brought up to date with current developments within the fast-changing Music Industry, in new technology, and systems for Digital Rights Management.

In addition to the range of modules within the BA (Hons) Music Industry Management programme students also have the opportunity to undertake a 20 credit module from another music or related degree programme at each level of study. One particular option is to take Music Production at levels one, two and three in order to gain an advanced practical skill in computer music sequencing and multitrack studio recording.
