This course aims to create innovative inter- disciplinary designers ready for a broad range of roles in the contemporary creative economy. The UK design industry is the largest in Europe, currently employing in excess of 185,000 designers and generating a turnover of £11.6bn. You will develop the professional skills required to build a successful career as an entrepreneurial creative practitioner, manager or consultant. Through studio sessions you will learn how to manage the design process and develop greater visual awareness. You will have the opportunity to experiment with diverse media and disciplines including 2D print, 3D design, motion graphics, textiles, products, interiors and photography. Many modules involve live projects that reflect current design practices.
Course structure
Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 gives a broad foundation of workshop skills covering 2D, 3D, visual awareness, print and computing for design.

Level 2 builds on the broad foundation with greater emphasis on conceptual thinking and the business of design. Areas include 2D, 3D, illustration and new technology.

Level 2 modules include:

Designer as Entrepreneur
Urban Places/ Design Spaces
Technological Exploration
Responsible Design
Theorising Art, Media &Design
New Technology for Manufacture
Illustration
Level 3 involves a Final Major Project and deepens understanding of design management and consultancy.

Major Project
In addition to the University’s standard entry requirements, you should have 200 points from to or more A levels (or equivalent). Applicants will be asked to attend an interview with a portfolio of creative work. Admission to level 2 is possible for those with relevant prior experience or qualification and a substantial portfolio of work. This course is also available as a four-year extended degree, the first year of which is the Foundation Year Art, Media, Design. A Progression Agreement is a formal arrangement between two or more education providers. It spells out what a learner needs to do to be considered for a place on a named programme of study.
