Introducing you to a wide range of historical, theoretical and philosophical approaches to contemporary art, this course encourages you to critically evaluate art processes, contexts and the framework of exhibition. The role of institutions and the art market and how they influence new art is examined. Artists' writing is also examined and you will be encouraged to articulate your ideas in an appropriate written form. You can choose a balance of theory and practice that best suits your needs, reflecting your own interests and career aspirations.
Course structure

For Single Honours you study eight modules at each of three levels. Joint Honours involves four modules from each level in Fine Art Contemporary Theory and Practice, plus four from your other subject.

Level 1 prepares you for higher education-level study, introducing key topics and helping you to gain an overview of your subject.

Level 2 develops your ability to move from directed learning to independent study.
It enables you to apply theoretical perspectives in developing your research and project work. You also address issues related to employability and professional practice.

Level 3 allows you to produce your own project, in consultation with tutors. You develop skills in problem identification and analysis through your project.

The course team has close links with a number of professional practitioners and placements of up to two months can be arranged, which can give you valuable professional experience.
Passes from at least two A levels, plus three other subjects at GCSE level Two GCE A-level passes, plus two other subjects at GCSE grade C or three GCE A-level passes, plus one other subject at GCSE grade C GNVQ at advanced level with a merit grade• BTEC National Diploma or Certificate with a pass grade GCSE grade C in English Language or key skills qualification level 3 or equivalent. Students are selected by portfolio inspection and interview. The course aims to select students with the potential to complete the course. Applicants who do not fully meet the entry requirements may be eligible to start an extended BA Art, Media & Design degree with a Foundation year, leading to a final award in Fine Art.
