This course is designed for those who intend to work in the high quality commission-led sector of the industry, or who aim to set up their own business as designers and makers of furniture. There is strong emphasis on making skills across a range of techniques and materials supported by relevant drawing and design modules. The possibilities offered by new digital technologies for craft are also introduced and a dedicated module develops skills in recording and presenting design and practical work professionally.
Level 1 introduces you to learning and assessment in Higher Education. You study eight modules at each of two levels. Modules include: Drawing, Furniture Craft Skills, Wood and Metal, Materials Technology, Wood Machining, CAD.
Level 2 increasingly addresses employability and professional practice.
Modules include: Modern and Traditional Furniture Construction, Portfolio Presentation, Business/Context of Design Studies/Care of Collections, Major Project.
There is a sequence of skills and modules building throughout the two years of the course, culminating in the modules in which you design, research plan and construct an item of furniture to you own design. There are opportunities to display your work at the department's end of year show and also to enter national and international exhibitions and competitions.
Successful completion of specific modules with the required grades guarantees progression to level 3 of the BA (Hons) in Furniture and Product Design, or level 3 of the BA (Hons) in Restoration and Conservation.
You will be required to present a portfolio of work at interview. You must also have attained GCSE grade C in English Language, key skills qualification level 3 or similar, plus one of the following; 100 points from one or more A-Levels, plus three other subjects at GCSE grade or one of the following; GNVQ at advanced level with a pass grade; BTEC National Diploma or Certificate; An Art and Design Foundation course; A recognised Access course. A Progression Agreement is a formal arrangement between two or more
education providers. It spells out what a learner needs to do to be
considered for a place on a named programme of study. Progression Agreements
may vary in the conditions they specify but they all aim to give guaranteed
pathways into higher education.
