This course is ideal preparation for postgraduate studies for those who wish to gain recent experience of academic study at MA level in the UK or for those requiring a useful and inspiring bridging experience between disciplines.
This intense ten-week course has four main discipline options and runs from July to the beginning of September. The course combines theoretical and practical study, providing you with a greater understanding of contemporary and historical context within your chosen discipline and critical theory applied to art and design.
Introducing research methods and skills, you are encouraged towards self-reflective critical practice as a means of developing creative work in relation to sustained projects. Practice-based projects enable you to gain experience of current working methods and allow theoretical teaching to be linked with your own ideas and the creation of work.
The course consists of two units:
UNIT 1: Contemporary Practice and Critical Perspectives. This unit is concerned with theoretical perspectives and contextual references both historical and contemporary, humanities research methods, critical thinking and analysis, and academic writing and structuring argument.
Themes are explored through lectures, seminars and workshops; initially theoretically and in a fine art context, then moving on to consider contemporary, international professional perspectives.
UNIT 2: Ideas in Action - Developing Creative Visual Practice. This unit concentrates on the conceptual basis of art and design, the translation of ideas into visual strategy and the use of critical evaluation to develop and refine work. This unit includes workshops in digital practices and specialist support within the students chosen field.
