Why Study this Course?
Both our Interior Design programmes (Foundation Degree and BA (Hons)) are highly popular courses at the cutting edge of one of Britains fastest growing areas of design practice. There are an exciting and ever increasing range of employment opportunities in the interior design field.

Course Content
Interior design is concerned with the making and management of space within an architectural context and offers a growing number of exciting career prospects. This course combines skills such as art, design, architecture and technology and deal with the relationship of people and spaces through planning, atmosphere, scale, colour, light, texture, and acoustics. Construction materials provide the creative and commercially motivated student the opportunity to develop the essential skills to succeed in working within the spatial and interior design industries.

Because of the range of opportunities involved in interior design we encourage applicants from different backgrounds and experiences of education, life and work. We are looking for people with a spatial awareness and an enthusiasm for making three-dimensional work. An interest in the vocational aspect of the course is vital.

The BA (Hons) degree is designed for students wishing to study full-time, while the Foundation Degree ,which is more vocational-based, is for students already working in the industry or those who wish to study part-time.

The Foundation Degree introduces students to the philosophy and practice of Interior Design through a range of realistic and challenging design projects. Each project focuses on differing aspects of this discipline and provides opportunities to develop skills and an understanding of the built environment.

Course Structure
Both courses are taught through a series of projects including practical subjects in spatial and interior design, and the curriculum is supported by critical and theoretical study and research skills. The foundation degree additionally offers work-based learning.

The building and construction of architectural and interior design projects involves the application of creative making and development skills in the context of exhibition design, retail, leisure, commercial and corporate design. The design development stages are supported by model making skills and understanding in the model making process. Creative use of materials and visual textures enables you interpret and represent the purpose of a design for exhibition and presentation purposes.

Digitally based spatial design allows a specialisation in the use of digital media in the depiction and development of spatial structures and enhances final realisation.

Throughout the course, visits are organised to venues and buildings of educational and cultural interest. Opportunities exist for students to take part in international study trips. Visits to professional venues and studios will also develop a contextual awareness of professional practice with additional industry guest speakers to support the professional development modules.

The college also accommodates artists in residence who work closely with our students and provide numerous opportunities to exhibit your work in the local region

Work Placement
The course includes periods of work placement and the opportunity to work on live briefs. Work experience takes place in a variety of locations within the design industry.

Many of the course team are practising professionals and therefore there is a wealth of knowledge, experience and contacts that are actively part of the programme.

Future Study
The Foundation Degree course will provide the necessary academic and specialist knowledge for progression on to Level 3 of our BA (Hons) Interior Design programme. On successful completion of all level one modules, students can achieve a Higher Certificate in Interior Design (2 years)
