Theatre and performance design provide the platform for a significant growth sector within the creative industries. Theatre and performance design create environments, costumes, objects, events and time-based media, which are used on stage, screen, and in virtual domains. They contribute designs and concepts that are in strong demand by theatre companies, event and marketing firms, film producers and art institutions. Theatre and performance design impact directly on the performing arts but maintain strong connections to other areas of design.

The MA Theatre and Performance Design at the University for the Creative Arts teaches students at advanced level in the following areas:

• scenography (including conceptualisation, storyboarding and stage management)

• set design and production

• prop making

• costume design and production

• lighting design and production

• event design

• performance art

The MA offers the opportunity to research and realise theatrical performance in its broadest sense, founded on a programme of professional and conceptual investigation. It is a discrete part of the post-graduate portfolio that shares common features across the curriculum with the MA provision in Design, Photography, and Fashion.

The MA in Theatre and Performance Design is based in the professional practice of contemporary performing arts. Students are asked to develop from this basis their own advanced understanding of the discipline and contribute significantly to its development.
The course encourages students to investigate diverse forms and media within the performing arts and produce an independent and creative research project, which reflects critically on established boundaries and acknowledges conceptual and professional relations within the creative industries and visual arts.

Course Structure

The MA in Theatre and Performance Design is divided into three terms across 45 weeks, studies either in full-time or flexible mode. The first term establishes the critical tradition and conceptual base of the study through a programme of lectures, seminars and workshops. The second sees the development of the personal research project. The final semester over the summer is devoted to realising the project for public performance and publication.

The MA is taught in small classes by tutors with extensive experience in the theory and practice of the performing arts, supported by a range of visiting professionals and scholars. The facilities at the University for the Creative Arts include access to theatre facilities, editing suites, and a wide range of design studios, as well as lecture theatres and library resources.
