Alison Kaute

Prospective student in Fashion Journalism Fashion & Textiles

I’ve found a lot of information on the internet, and also talked to a Creative Way advisor who gave me some advice on the different universities and the various courses on offer.

Where did you go to school?
In Penzance, Cornwall.

What training have you already done?
I studied for my GCSEs then went to Penwith College in Penzance. I ended up doing an Access to Higher Education course which helped me get on to a Foundation Degree in Media Advertising at Truro College, part of Plymouth University.

Which course would you like to study next?
I want to study fashion journalism.

Where would you like to study and why?
The two main places that offer fashion journalism courses are the London College of Fashion and the University for the Creative Arts at Epsom. However, I’m based in Penzance and have a young child, so am looking into alternatives closer to home.

Why do you want to study fashion journalism?
I love to write, I’m passionate about fashion and I want to expand my horizons.

What are the challenges involved in further study?
For me, it’s complicated because of my location, the potential cost and because I have a child. Right now, I’m taking a year out to figure out how I can take my studies further.

How have you researched the courses that are available?
I’ve found a lot of information on the internet, and also talked to a Creative Way advisor who gave me some advice on the different universities and the various courses on offer.

What kind of work experience do you have?
My first degree was in advertising, so I have some experience in that field, including a day spent at Saatchi & Saatchi in London. I’ve also done work experience for the Cornwall Blind Association, writing marketing materials.

What kind of job do you want to do eventually?
I would love to work as a journalist for a fashion magazine.

What do your friends and family think of your job prospects and your career ambitions?
My friends and family are happy I’m looking at moving on with my education, but don’t really understand the area I want to move into. This is something I need to do for myself, and I have to rely on myself to make it happen.
